Paul Ladnier 300x228

“Painting LIFE into Still Life” with Paul Ladnier

WHEN: Jan. 6th 9:30 – 4:00

WHERE: 150 Fox Valley Dr.
Orange Park FL 32073

COST: $125.00 members
$160.00 non-members

This class is about painting the beauty of the still life and capturing the essence of light, form and composition. It is about careful observation of the light source and establishing an interesting composition while emphasizing a focal point. Students will see, understand and interpret light; the quiet shadows and soft light that create form and texture.

They will work towards a completed painting in the time allowed. The class will help the students develop a natural and convincing approach to painting a still life. We will discuss mixing colors, composition, value, form and a variety of processes and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on accurate drawing and “energetic, logical, exciting beginnings.”

Gradual refinement will lead to a convincing finish. Resolution of the painting is encouraged as time permits but not necessary. This class will also increase the individual’s awareness of the materials and the creative process in painting while developing personal goals and establishing aesthetic sensibility. Directions will be given on “getting started,” setting up the palette, planning, mixing color, observing the subject and the importance of establishing good painting habits and procedures.

The materials list is only a guideline. Feel free to bring what you are used to and comfortable with.

Canvas   11 X 14 or 16 x 20.
PAINT: All major brands are good but stay away from the student grades. COLORS: Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre ,Orange,Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Sap Green, Viridian Green ,Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber Titanium White, Ivory or Chromium Black Black
SOLVENT: Odorless Turpenoid (brand name), Gamsol or odorless mineral spirits. No regular Turpentine. I do not usually  use additional medium. The simpler the better. No solvents go down any sink.
BRUSHES: Hogs Bristle Brushes In sizes #4, #6, #8, #10- They may be your shape of choice, I like Filberts and Flats. 2 ‘Round’s in size #1 or #2- and a ‘rigger’ brush. This is for sketching in the painting and detail. You might have fun trying a 3/8 or 1⁄2 inch ‘mop’ brush. It looks like a rounded make up brush (not the squirrel pointed one). This is great for blocking in thinned paint.
PALETTE: Plexiglas sheet, oiled wooden palette or covered plastic palette box. Nothing smaller than 9×12. easel It can be a table easel or stand up Rags or Paper Towels

BIO: Art has always been a part of my soul. I am the daughter of an artist and the mother to one, and have done some form of art for as long as I can remember.
I spent 20 years as an Advertising Agency owner, and worked both on the creative and business side. It was not until I sold the agency and my children were grown that I could pursue my art full-time. Since that time, I have concentrated on working in watercolor for the past 25 years, and have studied with many modern-day masters in the medium. My work reflects a love of color and light, and my subjects depict things that interest me from my journey through life.
I am a signature member and Past President for the Florida Watercolor Society, and a past Board member for Central Florida Watercolor Society. In 2019, I was honored to be juried into membership with the Whiskey Painters of America, a national miniature watercolor painting society.
I am a Resident Artist of the Leesburg Art Center, located in downtown Leesburg, Florida.

Paints:

  • Any quality tube paint such as Winsor Newton, Holbein, Schminke, American Journey (still available online), DaVinci or Daniel Smith; Cotman and Reeves paints are not recommended because they have a smaller pigment-to-water ratio; results are not good with these paints. Please, NO PAN or Half Pan paints.
  • Aureolin (DaVinci or Daniel Smith recommended; Winsor-Newton is not)
  • Ultramarine Blue (Red Shade) (any brand above)
  • Pthalo Blue or Winsor Blue (Winsor Newton)
  • Cobalt Blue (Winsor Newton)
  • Permanent Rose (any brand above)
  • Nice to have: Burnt Scarlet, Raw Sienna, Mineral Violet, New Gamboge (not WN), Sap Green (Holbein), Transparent Orange (Schminke); and bring any of your other colors that you wish.

Paper:

  • 140 lb. hot-press paper (Stonchenge only)
  • 140 lb. cold-press paper (Arches is preferred, Fabriano or Hahnemuhle). A full sheet, which is a better value for the money, which we will divide into halves and quarters, depending on subject matter. Please stay away from 90 lb. paper!!! Please DO NOT BUY STRATHMORE or Master’s Touch pad paper in 90 or 140lb!      You won’t be happy with the results.      Brushes:    For this class, I recommend synthetic or synthetic/natural hair brushes. Winsor Newton, Princeton, Silver Brush all make good quality, mid-priced brushes. Cheap brushes tend to lose hair as you paint and are a real frustration.
  • Rounds: 12 OR 14; Nice to have: #14 Ultra Round Flats: 1″ and 1-1/2″ wash brush Rigger for fine lines
  • Cat Tongue (also called Oval Wash) Silver Black Velvet I” is nice to have

Other Necessary Items: 4 x 6″ or 5 x 7″ rectangles for this purpose) Palette (Useful: a LARGE White Plastic Palette, small ones will not work for this class because we will be making large puddles) Watercolor Support Board Adjustable Mist Sprayer (A fine mist is ok but not ideal) Paper Towels Masking Tape Water containers (I use one for rinse water, one for fresh mixing; the larger, the better). Cheap Mechanical Pencil and a white or kneaded eraser Serap watercolor paper for value studies (I cut up my old or unsuccessful paintings into

“Calligraphy A to Z Made E-Z:
An Introduction to the Italic Hand Using a Felt-tipped Nib”
with Betty McKee

WHEN: April 7th – 9:30am – 4:00pm

WHERE: Fox Valley Dr.
Orange Park FL 32073

COST: $125.00 members
$160.00 non-members

Betty McKee is an Atlanta-born artist, coming to the Jacksonville area with her husband’s Naval service. Her interest in art emerged from a desire to illustrate Clay County churches and historical sites in pen and ink. She accompanied these drawings with hand-lettering. Seeking to learn better letterforms and to encourage others to put Scripture on the walls of their homes, she studied calligraphy and began a cottage industry called The Inkspot.
She attended two international calligraphic
conferences, was engaged in a year-long study with Reggie Ezell, and studied with noted calligraphers at local workshops as well as studies in related arts. She was a founding member of the Calligrapher’s
Calligraphy Guild in Jacksonville.

Betty taught calligraphy for a number of years at JoAnn’s stores, developing an 8-week program of study for adults. She also taught calligraphy at several of art festivals at local public schools in Clay and Duval Counties. While a member of the Calligrapher’s Guild, she created, designed and implemented a teaching program in calligraphy for the elementary students for the Clay and Duval Picture Lady Programs. The teaching program, called Project Calligraphy, was presented and adopted by larger state calligraphy organization with the intent for a broader application. Speedball used this project as a prototype for launching a national approach to teaching calligraphy called Elegant Writing:
Calligraphy in the Classroom.

Betty’s services have been employed by such major corporations and places as Lockheed, GMAC, NAS, Jacksonville, Wendy’s, and JoAnn’s Etc., and such civic organizations as the Jacksonville Historical Society, St. Augustine Junior League and churches. Betty’s calligraphic works have been
exhibited locally and regionally at galleries and museums, and are displayed in many homes. Her greatest pleasure has been in creating a repertoire of seasonal Christian processional banners for her church.

The Art of Calligraphy as an art form has an advantage over other visual arts in that it
communicates precisely what the artist wishes to express in language. And the
calligrapher must be true to the text, that is, faithful to the author. Thus, a presentation is only an embellishment of what the author is believed to be saying.
—Betty McKee.
